Bright, water-resistant lights are a necessity for riding a bike at night or in bad weather. It's really nice being seen by other traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. The only negative part are the batteries. My lights always seem to get dim whenever I don't have a spare set of batteries. Serfas has just released a new series of lights with a rechargeable power source. Instead of using a proprietary AC-adaptor/charger, however; they utilize a super-convenient USB plug that allows you to recharge using your computer. The USB-1 models have a plug built-in to the light - no cord necessary! They're also very quick to install and remove, allowing them to be switched between bikes easily and prevent theft. The best part, though, they're all under $30.

Cheap bike storage solutions!

A passion for bikes is a great thing, but it can lead to a storage nightmare! Last week two of our employees, Morgan and Pete, set out to help out some friends who had recently moved into a house that is over-flowing with bicycles. Between the five residents of the new home there are eleven bicycles and one unicycle, so as you can imagine bike space is tight and this project had to be carried out on a budget. They used a twelve-foot-long 2" x 6" purchased from Home Depot and ten Sunlite Storage Hooks which are available at Cambridge Bicycle for $9.95 a pair. All together a cheap and durable storage area was created for under $50 and about two hours worth of work.

If you're interested in learning more about in-home bike storage solutions, come in and we would be happy to help you with the many available options!

Just like pictures, bicycles are worth a thousand words. Dan's Miyata, however; is worthy of it's own Homeric epic. He dumpstered this frame, which was once a 1980's chromoly road bike with Shimano 600 parts, and quickly stripped it. It's been built and re-built several times; changed ownership at least three times; and was once literally dragged behind a car to New Jersey by a previous owner. This bike has been a fixed gear, single-ring road bike, and currently is a dedicated single speed. Aside from it's pallet of stickers, rust, and chipped paint, there are other elements to this rig that makes it the perfect commuter for Dan.

Some of the highlights are, apart from stickers and spokey dokes; a Brooks leather saddle, Odyssey BMX pedals (for grip and durability), a wheelset he built himself (Mavic Open Pros to Formula hubs) and flat-resistant tires, and the essential beat-up front basket. It's certainly one of the more unique bikes you'll see locked outside our shop and one of the most-loved.

If you stopped by our shop late yesterday afternoon you may have noticed a new antique in our window display. Kip recently acquired this 100+ year old bike, made in the days where everyone was riding fixed gears because that was the only type of bike that existed (besides gear-less bikes, like penny farthings). This bike can be seen in the front window of our shop. There are much more features worth checking out on this bike than we have time to photograph in blog, so stop by the shop and take a look.

Pete is a member of our mechanic staff, races cyclocross with our friends at Geekhouse, and has excellent sense of bike building. Aside from having one of the most nicest commuter bikes I've seen (an old Soma frame with a mix of vintage high-end Shimano and new parts, plus cruiser bars!) he has a couple other rides. Above and below are images of his Cervelo road bike.

Pete's got this super light frame set up extremely properly: Thomson stem and seatpost, 3T bars, Chris King headset, Chris King hubs on a custom wheelset, and a full SRAM Force group. Just as with any bike, the ride is all in the details and Pete has this bike built with very intentionally chosen components.

We recently assembled a bike for an MIT student, Yang. A couple days later she came back with the above prototype LED signal arrow. It's a removable backpack attachment with LED arrows, each on their own circuit, with activation buttons placed on the backpack's shoulder strap. This solves the problem of bicycle turn signaling: most cyclists either don't know proper signaling, don't use signals, or make up their own hand gestures to signal where they're going. She's got a lot of bright ideas floating around. To see more of them, check out her blog; YangWare.

Velo Orange makes excellent cruiser bars that work for all kinds of bikes. Our sales employee Ben has been using their Montmarte cruiser bar for well over a year on his Fuji Track. We currently have the Bellevile bar, which is very similar but without rise.
These two bars are the only two on the market that are this narrow: they're still shoulder-wide, but slim enough to snake through traffic with ease. They are also perfect for carrying
a front rack or basket and look absolutely awesome (even after a year of heavy use):

Sightings from a recent trip

Last weekend I went for a (very short) trip on tour. First time riding ever with pannier bags. It was a 60 mile solo trip with a set of loaded rear panniers from Newburyport to the lakes area of NH to visit family. I was a little weary of stopping to shoot often due to headwinds, but here are some of the few images I shot (click for larger image):

Newburyport isn't a bad place at all to launch from on bikes. There is another train that actually runs through NH to Maine from Boston, but their bike policy is cripplingly inconvenient. You can make it to Mt. Washington in three days from Newburyport, easily. If you're looking to get north this is your season to be hitting the road. Who knows what you'll see?

KHS Cidi 3 and Cidi 8

The Green, a steel three-speed by KHS, has had a place in our shop and hearts for years. It's inexpensive, durable, and comes with a rack, fenders, bell, and Dutch lock. It makes a great bike for getting around the city and is a joy to ride. For 2010 KHS has released two new models that represent an upgraded take on the classic Green: the Cidi 3 and Cidi 8.

The Cidi 3 and Cidi 8 are essentially Greens with aluminum frames and upgraded parts. They have Shimano Nexus 3-speed and 8-speed internal hubs respectively, as well as the usual trappings: rack, fenders, and front and rear hand brakes (as opposed to the Green's coaster brake). Best of all, they won't break the bank: the Cidi 3 is $439, and the Cidi 8 is just $659...making these bikes two of the most inexpensive internally-geared commuters on the market. Come in and try one today!

This model is the same as the Fuji Track Classic, only with a 44 cm frame with 650c wheels. The standover height is just over 27" which makes it great for people below average height but still above 5'1" tall (or so). It's designed to take 650c wheels (rather than the larger standard, 700c), in order to make the bike easier to handle with a smaller frame.

It has v-brakes and levers by Tektro, and is available as a step-through frame. It also looks great, too.
My u-lock was giving me some trouble over the past few weeks, and I wasn't sure why. Then I realized that I had been using it almost every day for a year and a half. I had a couple backup keys that came with it, so I started using a new one and the lock worked like brand new! The old one is on the bottom. You can see that some of the notches are almost completely worn away.

If you have a Kryptonite lock, be sure to always one or two extra hidden somewhere safe. It also helps if you squirt some Triflow (or other light weight oil) into the lock every few months, especially during prolonged periods of wet weather. If water gets into your lock, it may freeze in there. You can solve this problem by thawing it with a lighter, or prevent it by using the lock's shield and hanging it keyhole down. With a little preparedness and preventative maintenance, a Kryptonite lock can last for years.

SE's Lager is a bike that just keeps on improving. In stock we currently have their black/white model and it looks sharp! The Lager is built as a single speed with a flip-flop hub. It comes with some solid parts, too: headset by Cane Creek, brakes and levers by Tektro, and cranks by FSA. The top tube pad even has a zipper, rather than velcro. The KHS Flite 100 has always been a great choice for a sub-$800 track bike, and this year is no exception. With its double-butted chromoly frame, track geometry, metal pedals with toe clips, and super light weight, it's an excellent choice for street and velodrome riding alike. This year it comes in gold, green, and black color options, with a track drop bar, and three-piece front brake. The best part is that it's dropped in price from $660 to only $599! We have a 55 cm currently in stock, and we'll be getting more sizes in upcoming weeks. We can even order it as a framset for custom builds! Stop on by to hear more reasons why this bike makes a great beginner track bike, everyday city bike, or even an internal-hub conversion.

It's been snowing for a couple hours now, but we're still seeing people on bikes outside. Weather like this is great for riding, even if you don't have studded tires on your bike. With most snowy conditions we face you should be fine on marginally wide, knobby tires, even if they don't have an aggressive tread. We don't recommend using studded tires, because they cost upwards of $100 per tire, and don't offer much of an advantage with the type of winters we have. Generally, by the time it's too snowy to be rideable, it's too much for any bicycle wheel to plow through. You'd be surprised what kind of weather is rideable if you slow down, use a low gearing, and take it very easy around corners.

We were visited by the bike wheel fairy recently and now have a new ultra-awesome wheelset up for sale: a new old stock freewheel HED disc wheel, and a Rovol bladed-spoke front wheel. They're both 650c, and haven't ever been touched with glue until we glued these incredibly light Panaracer tires on. We're guessing these are at least 16 years old or so, maybe even older. We're selling the wheels for $299 each (with tire) or $399 for the set. This set has been boxed up for much too long and are begging to go to a good home.
