The hybrid was introduced to encourage casual recreational riding along with providing a comfortable option for doing errands and commuting. For many people who want or can afford only one “knock around” bicycle, hybrid can be the best bike for a combination of getting around the Boston area, occasional trips on country roads, and rare trips to mountain trails.
The hybrid bicycle is a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. You might want to think of a hybrid bicycle as “a mountain bike modified for road use”, but hybrid bicycles can vary in how ‘mountain’ or how ‘road’ they are equipped.
Hybrid bicycles have 700c wheels and tires, as you'd find on a road bike. The
hybrid uses riser or straight handlebars and larger mountain bike gear ratios, making uphill climbs less difficult. Sometimes the hybrid will a use suspended front fork,
other times the fork will be rigid.
The seats on a hybrid tend to be softer than a road or mountain bike, the top tube of the bicycle
frame tends to be shorter than a mountain or road bike, and this will promote a more upright riding position. The frame and wheels are lighter and more narrow than a mountain bike; more like a road bike.
