Mountain bikes have evolved and improved dramatically over the last few years.
Full front and rear suspension is common. Most high end mountain bicycles now have hydraulic disc brakes for improved stopping power.
The latest trends include long-travel suspension mountain bikes and, on the other end of the travel spectrum, rigid single-speed mountain bikes.
Cross Country (XC) – for racing over long distances, small amount of suspension or “travel” (80-100 mm) front and rear, 20 pounds (9 kg) up to 30 pounds (14 kg).
Enduro ("All-Mountain") - 100-150 mm suspension travel front and rear, 30 pounds (9 kg) to 35 pounds (14 kg).
Freeride - designed to be an all-arounder. 200 mm (8 inches) suspension travel, 30 to 50 pounds.
Downhill – for downhill racing and summer ski slope riding. 40-50 pounds (18 to 23 kg), 8+ inches (200+ mm) or more suspension travel.
Trial - For trail racing. No suspension, only one gear, 15 to 25 pounds.
Dirt Jumping - Very strong mountain bicycle, with 3 to 5 in (75 to 125 mm) of front suspension, no rear suspension, and often single gear.
Single-speed - Mountain bike with one gear. |
