Topeak Safety Seat II Recall ***Updated***
Topeak just gave notice that they are recalling their Safety Seat II model, which we have been selling and stocking. There is apparently a risk of injury to children that are seated within both their standard and disc-brake rack models. We have received a limited number of retrofit kits from Topeak to fix affected models. If you purchased your seat from us, we are glad to help you out. Otherwise you can contact Topeak directly to have a kit shipped to you. (Please be sure to read the...

Custom Wheelset
Our service department just finished building this unique wheelset for a regular customer looking to replace a wheelset lost in an accident. We recommended Mavic rims, since the customer had v-brakes on the bike and Mavic still makes a high quality 26" rim. Since he wanted light and strong hubs we set him up with a set of DT Swiss mountain hubs, and for color, red anodized spoke nipples. The bike is primarily seeing duty as a city commuter. We just got in a huge order from Continental Tires...

New Light Preview: Knog Blinder
Our Knog rep stopped by the other day with a demo of a new light coming soon. "Go get a glass of water," he said, "it's not just waterproof against rain - it's fully submerge able." Not all "waterproof" lights are waterproof - leave them out in the rain overnight or ride long enough in a downpour and lesser models might fail. The Knog Blinder is not one of these. It's also super bright, easily mountable to almost all bikes and is rechargeable via USB. Basically, it's everything we like in a...

Fall Lighting
Leaves are changing, the weather's getting cooler (some days, at least), and the sun isn't staying up until 8:30 pm anymore. Fall is in full swing, and that means everyone's at risk of getting caught after dusk earlier in the day. We always have a full range of lights in stock from $30/set and up. Above are a few higher-caliber options for those commuting either on dark roads and paths, or in very awful weather, or both. Left to right: Planet Bike Blaze 2 watt headlight, Serfas TSL-250...

Serfas lights back in stock!
After some delay we are happy to announce that Serfas USB rechargable lights are back in stock. Riding with a bright and reliable light is incredibly important, especially during these less than perfect winter days. The Serfas TRUE 150 and 250 (model numbers match Lumen output) are a great bang for the buck at $99 and $129 respectively. P.S. Don't forget not having a light is a ticketable offense here in Cambridge. According to the Cambridge bicycle safety laws: Between dusk and dawn a bicycle...
Winter Tires
Since the temperature dropped a few weeks ago and we've received classic New England Winter™ we've had a lot of questions about studded tires for winter riding. The short version of this conversation is "don't buy them if you live in Boston." Studded tires are great for riding on frozen surfaces that stay frozen and snow-covered, but are not necessarily great for the conditions we see here. Snow removal in the Boston area is pretty efficient and roads tend to clear up within a couple days...

New Ortleib Arrivials
A fresh order from Ortlieb just landed in our shop this afternoon. We are currently re-stocked with bike-packer, roll-top, shopping, and office bag panniers; as well as backpack messengerbags. For those of you who feel aluminum alloy racks aren't cutting it, behold the Tubus Cargo rear rack: Tubus racks are made out of chromoly which has a number of benefits for touring and commuting. Chromoly steel is re-weldable, whereas aluminum racks are not. This means that if your rack breaks while on an...
Serfas USB Lights
Bright, water-resistant lights are a necessity for riding a bike at night or in bad weather. It's really nice being seen by other traffic, pedestrians, and cyclists. The only negative part are the batteries. My lights always seem to get dim whenever I don't have a spare set of batteries. Serfas has just released a new series of lights with a rechargeable power source. Instead of using a proprietary AC-adaptor/charger, however; they utilize a super-convenient USB plug that allows you to...

Yang’s Signal Arrow Prototype
We recently assembled a bike for an MIT student, Yang. A couple days later she came back with the above prototype LED signal arrow. It's a removable backpack attachment with LED arrows, each on their own circuit, with activation buttons placed on the backpack's shoulder strap. This solves the problem of bicycle turn signaling: most cyclists either don't know proper signaling, don't use signals, or make up their own hand gestures to signal where they're going. She's got a lot of bright ideas...

Kryptonite Keys
My u-lock was giving me some trouble over the past few weeks, and I wasn't sure why. Then I realized that I had been using it almost every day for a year and a half. I had a couple backup keys that came with it, so I started using a new one and the lock worked like brand new! The old one is on the bottom. You can see that some of the notches are almost completely worn away. If you have a Kryptonite lock, be sure to always one or two extra hidden somewhere safe. It also helps if you squirt some...
Hamburgers = Anime
We found a broken hamburger bell at the shop today. The bells are made out of plastic (which doesn't ring) so naturally, a plastic bell must have a metal ringer component. It looks like these ones have a secret custom paint job: These should be great stocking stuffers for the bicycle/hamburger/anime enthusiast in your life.
Kids on Coffee
For a little while, we've had a few coffee-themed bikes in the shop: Bianchi's Milano Parco cafe racers, and our folding bikes by KHS: the Mocha and Latte. For 2010 we've added a brand new city bike by Bianchi that's a great choice for both getting coffee as well as serious commuting: the Pista Via Brera. The Pista Via Brera is designed for functionality and style: it comes with a fixed/free drivetrain, laid-back handlebars (with cork grips!) a threaded headset, a front brake, and...

During the rain yesterday we unearthed a few boxes of old stock from the basement, all of which is now on sale. We even have frame pumps that are perfect for your steel road frames! Everything's priced low so we get it all out of our hands and into yours.

Brooks NACCC 2009 Saddle
Today we received a large shipment of Brooks products. Not only did we restock the usual saddles, but we also purchased the 2009 NACCC commemorative saddle! This limited edition (60/250) red Race Team saddle has the NACCC logo embossed on the top. Both Cambridge Bicycle and Superb were checkpoints during the race, so we're proud to have this saddle in stock. Other new arrivals include a pair of Barbican sling bags, Brick Lane panniers, saddle bags, toe clips/straps, and other bicycle...
Peterboro Baskets
As soon as UPS dropped off the box from Peterboro Baskets, our employee Ling became instantly excited. Baskets are a great addition to almost any bicycle, but wired steel isn't for everyone. These baskets can carry up to 60 lbs, with an aesthetic to match even the classiest of bicycles. Made of high-strength ash wood, genuine leather straps, zinc-coated buckles, and a water-resistant vinyl interior, Peterboro Baskets (made in Peterboro, New Hampshire) are a handsome edition to any bicycle. The...
Bailey Works bags just in time for the Halloween alley cat!
Our employee Pete is excited because we've just received a shipment of Super Pro sling bags from Bailey Works...sizes and colors galore! We even got a few with an added laptop divider section. All Bailey Works products are made by hand in Portsmouth, NH, and are of legendary quality. Many of our staff use these packs every day-- a sensible decision if you're going to be hauling stuff on your back either on or off a bike.
The new Planet Bike Blaze 2-Watt LED headlight has just arrived!
We just received a shipment of the brand new, highly anticipated Blaze 2-Watt LED headlight made by Planet Bike! This is definitely the brightest non-rechargeable bicycle headlight I've ever seen-- I'm still seeing spots from Morgan flashing the thing in my face fifteen minutes ago! These are currently back ordered from most distributors, so come in soon and pick one up before they're gone! Blaze 2-Watt LED Headlight by Planet Bike - $59.95, featuring: * Reinforced alloy midsection * High and...
Soma Iggy Wheelset and Gomah King Carrier
We have two new items for sale in the shop that are making waves. The first is Soma Fabrication's Iggy Wheelset. What's so radical about a three-speed set of wheels, you may ask? Well, the Iggy is a chrome-finished, double-walled, alloy wheelset with machined sidewalls...and a hub spaced at 120mm to fit a track bike! In short, it's the remedy for those who tire of riding either fixed gear or single speed for only $269.95! This lovely rack is the Gamoh King Carrier. It's made of super-tough...

We even have their rugged, roll-top Warsaw model in stock! Come by and check them out, and be sure to take a look in our display case for our Chrome hip packs and accessory pouches for just $19.95 and $39.95!
Swobo water bottles
We've been trying our hardest to "avoid the bummer life" in many different ways this past summer. One of our most self-satisfying methods has been with the Swobo "not a water bottle." While this looks like an ordinary water bottle (despite Swobo's insistence otherwise) it is not ordinary. This bottle is not only free of plastics that will leech into the bottle (causing an off-taste and/or other health problems) it is also biodegradable. That means one less way to contribute to the patches of...
New Ortlieb shipment
Yesterday we got a shipment in from Ortlieb and of course, we all got a little excited. Not only did we get their waterproof messenger bags (Velocity Rucksack, Messenger, and Messenger Pro), but we got a variety of panniers as well. We received a few pairs of the waterproof classics, their shopping bag, and two of their office bags. As soon as we got them unboxed, however; we sold an office bag to a Harvard professor. If you've been thinking about getting one of these you should probably come...
Updated Display Cases
As Boston Bicycle has been renovated and re-opened as Superb, we've been transitioning as well over here at Cambridge. Our display cases have recently undergone a complete revamping and overhaul. We're excited about this and eager to share: We've got tons of new things on display, including a recent shipment from Brooks Saddles including new saddle covers and saddle bags, Swobo powder-coated riser bars, and Swobo BMX-style threadless stems (25.4 clamp diameter!) Come in and check them out!
Tom’s generator light
There are many reasons to have a front light on a bike. When you're riding at night visibility is important, and oncoming traffic have less time to see you than cars approaching you from behind. Additionally, especially in areas without street lights, the road itself is nearly invisible. A solid front light is a necessity to keep from hitting glass, pot holes, curbs, and the occasional skunk (I spotted one in Brookline around midnight last night!) Our mechanic Tom recently purchased a...
New Freight Arrivals!
Yesterday we opened a brand new box from Freight. The packing slip said it weighed over 70 lbs. Judging by the amount of stuff we got, I'm surprised it didn't weigh more! As you can see, we received a bunch of smaller things: top tube pads, hip packs of many sizes, radio holsters, cell phone holders, and even a "road soda" holder! You gotta carry your cane-sugar rootbeer somewhere - it might as well be on your head tube. Our bag wall is COMPLETELY full right now. We even have a few new bags...
New Origin 8 build and Ortlieb bags!
Our mechanic Tom recently finished this custom build for the shop. It's the new Origin 8 Del Pesado frame built as a coaster brake single-speed, equipped with riser bars, DP-18 rims, and Odyssey pedals. It's a great bike for getting around and getting your sick skids on. Also: it's yours for $650! Get it for yourself before someone else does. (We also have a couple of these framesets available for purchase, or for a custom build. They're only $199 if you buy a crankset and wheelset, too!) Just...
Light Lane Prototype released
Want your bike to shoot lasers? Of course you do! While some may fantasize of this idea for more subversive means, the designers at Boston's own LightLane have more practical uses for bike-mounted laser projectiles. Months ago their design for a self-contained, laser-projected bike lane for night riding made the rounds of the internet. Recently, they created a working prototype of their concept and a video documenting it in action. Compressed digital video and real-life experience are two...
Load bearing
The revolution will be carried on your bicycle and there are more ways of doing it than ever before. This one with the top is an animal basket, but it could be useful for a lot of stuff. This last photo is from a customer's bike. She bought our wildly popular KHS Green and mounted a quick-release front basket to the rear rack. I'm not recommending this gerry-rig, but the thought of adaptations is always so evolutionary....

Another Day, Another Shipment
As the cycling season has come into full swing so has the number of shipments we have been receiving. It seems like every weekday we get multiple shipments of goods to keep the Boston and Cambridge cyclists on their bikes. Yesterday one of our favorite local celebrity cyclists had stopped in at about the time one of our shipments rolled in and jumped right in helping to unload the truck. She can be seen here in the back ground, with Pete in the foreground. Recognize her yet? Well here is a...
Bailey Works Art Project
I took a couple days off to explore Portsmouth and i tripped onto the Ello gallery and shop. Our man John Bailey sponsored this cool project where N.H, Artists were able to unleash their creative powers on some of our favorite bags. The results as you can see are stunning. So --head up to Portsmouth to check this out. More posts to come on this trip.
