Keith’s Cinelli MASH Work

Keith’s Cinelli MASH Work

We are absolutely fired up about the chance to build a new 2017 Cinelli MASH Work frame, almost as excited as Keith was about selecting components discerningly and getting the project together.  Lots of choice components here from the old standbys - Thomson stem and seatpost, SRAM omnium cranks,  VP-001 pedals, Panaracer Pasela PT tires - to the more unique: check out the purple anodized Mini Moto brakes, matching Wolf Tooth headset spacer.   He selected a set of lightweight fenders made for...

Cinelli Mash Work Custom Build

Cinelli Mash Work Custom Build

Just wrapped up a simply gorgeous custom build with a Cinelli Mash frame. Our customer chose nothing but the best for this one, including H+Son Archetypes laced to White Industries track hubs we built in house.  Parts highlights: White Industries freewheel and ENO crankset, Chris King headset, Thomson carbon handlebars,  Panaracer Gravel King tires, Brooks Cambium saddle and grips, Paul Component Mini Moto brakes and Love Levers, and a Soma Porteur Deluxe rack to boot.   Check out that Ti...

Brandon’s Kazane Rebuild

Brandon’s Kazane Rebuild

Brandon came into the shop recently with a Kazane track frame, a mix of parts, and a mission. We helped him rebuild the bike with a mix of his old  parts and new. Upgrades included a  fork and cockpit  (Cinelli Pepper riser bars, FSA Orbit headset, and a new stem), an awesome Cinelli Unicantor saddle, and sleek pedal assembly (All-city toe cages and leather toe straps on MKS pedals). All other parts were spit-shined to perfection before install. He worked with us to make sure his project was...

Service Area Spotlight: Custom Wheelbuilding

Service Area Spotlight: Custom Wheelbuilding

Pete and Alex (featured) are two of our primary wheelbuilders on staff. A custom, hand built wheel offers a wide array of rim, hub, and spoke choices for either high demand cycling, or for unique projects where a stock rim is just not available. We frequently offer hand built wheels for heavy-duty commuters, cycle tourists, and road cyclists who need the reliability and strength that only a professionally built wheel can offer. While we do offer an extensive...

Luis’ Handsome Devil

Luis’ Handsome Devil

Luis came to us looking for a bike for everyday use to save his high end road bike from the extra wear and tear of the city. He and Josh worked together, starting out with a complete Handsome Devil. Custom components include Brooks Yellow Ochre bar tape, Brooks Team Pro Chrome in Yellow Ochre, Nitto Noodle drop handlebars, MKS Touring...

Ben’s DIY 36er

Ben’s DIY 36er

We were taken by surprised when this rolled through the shop this weekend. The owner and builder's name is Ben, and he's working  to complete his own 36" mountain bike. It's a complete DIY project from the drawing board down to welding the frame and cutting custom spoke lengths. His ultimate goal is using it for trail riding and maybe some racing. Best of luck to him and the build--we can't wait to see the finished product.

Morgan’s Saila

Morgan’s Saila

Everyone loves a New Bike Day, but there is something extra special about your very first New Custom Bike Day. I recently had the joy of getting my first custom frame built by Lauren Trout at Saila. Lauren is an incredibly talented builder and I'm stoked to have this gorgeous bike. A special thanks goes out to Brad at Sugercoat/Geekhouse for the powder coating. Here is the built details for the nerdz: Fork - Easton EC90x Wheels - Mavic Aksium Tires - Continental Grand Prix 4 Seasons (28c)...

Jamis Dragon Team Custom Build

Jamis Dragon Team Custom Build

A couple weeks ago Andrew walked into the shop, and struck up a conversation with our mechanic, Ryan, about mountain biking. Ryan's introduction to cycling was riding cross-country trails as a young'un in rural New England, and has been passionate about the discipline since. They started talking about bikes, with Andrew asking him, "Well, what would you ride?" Many minutes later, the conversation ended with an order the build above. Andrew's new hardtail is based on the Jamis Dragon Team Pro,...

Glow Bike Details

Glow Bike Details

Due to a new cell phone commercial there's been a huge spike in interest regarding bikes that glow in the dark. We've been fielding a lot of questions regarding the bike pictured above.  Our glow bike project from a few years ago has been making its rounds on the internet since the day we completed it. We do not have any stock bicycles available for sale with this kind of paint: this bike was a custom build involving parts that were custom powdercoated with a glow-in-the-dark pigment. Superb...

Employee Bike Profile: Ryan’s Bottechia

Employee Bike Profile: Ryan’s Bottechia

Ryan is one of our mechanics and has a very particular taste in bicycles and parts. This is his Bottechia, his winter/rain/general city-use road bike. He uses it as a utilitarian vehicle and as a recreational road bike for when he doesn't want to use any of his nicer rides. That's not to say this bicycle isn't nice, because it has a lot of nice parts on it, but it's extremely unique in how it's put together, the parts variety used, and how it actually works very well. On his Velo-Orange...

Urban Soul 3-Speed Build

Urban Soul 3-Speed Build

Pictured above is a KHS Urban Soul 3-speed build, with coaster brake, and grip shifter. This build uses a Shimano Nexus internally-geared hub, with double-walled rims on front and rear wheels. Although the Nexus hub's coaster brake works really well, we kept on a front rim brake for quicker stops and to make getting on and off the bike easier. This semi-custom build is a size large, and is for sale at $479.95. The three-speed wheel kit mention above is available separately for $159.95 with cog...

Employee Bike Profile: Ling’s Lyon

Employee Bike Profile: Ling’s Lyon

Ling's well known at the shop for being the go-to person for info on the 43cm/650c Fuji Classic Track; but that isn't the only bike she rides. Pictured above is her Lyon, a fillet-brazed road bike with a classic ride quality and modern set of components. This build is the product of very careful planning and decision-making - a project long in the works. The main guts of the bike consists of a SRAM Rival groupset for its light weight, smooth shifting, and reliability. The handlebars are by...

Employee Bike Profile: Ben’s Bianchi Volpe

Employee Bike Profile: Ben’s Bianchi Volpe

Last September Ben bought himself a Bianchi Volpe as an all-'rounder road bike. Since then he has made a few notable upgrades and changes to the bike that have given it a more personalized purpose and appearance as a light-tourer and all-weather commuter bike. Although the 9-speed Deore rear derailleur is itself a very durable and reliable part, an XT is even smoother, lighter, and more durable. The shifter and brake cables themselves have been swapped out with stainless steel to prevent...

Employee Bike Profile: Stephen’s Igleheart

Employee Bike Profile: Dan’s Miayata

Employee Bike Profile: Dan’s Miayata

Just like pictures, bicycles are worth a thousand words. Dan's Miyata, however; is worthy of it's own Homeric epic. He dumpstered this frame, which was once a 1980's chromoly road bike with Shimano 600 parts, and quickly stripped it. It's been built and re-built several times; changed ownership at least three times; and was once literally dragged behind a car to New Jersey by a previous owner. This bike has been a fixed gear, single-ring road bike, and currently is a dedicated single speed....

Employee Bike Profile: Pete’s Cervelo

Employee Bike Profile: Pete’s Cervelo

Pete is a member of our mechanic staff, races cyclocross with our friends at Geekhouse, and has excellent sense of bike building. Aside from having one of the most nicest commuter bikes I've seen (an old Soma frame with a mix of vintage high-end Shimano and new parts, plus cruiser bars!) he has a couple other rides. Above and below are images of his Cervelo road bike. Pete's got this super light frame set up extremely properly: Thomson stem and seatpost, 3T bars, Chris King headset, Chris King...

Yang’s Signal Arrow Prototype

Yang’s Signal Arrow Prototype

We recently assembled a bike for an MIT student, Yang. A couple days later she came back with the above prototype LED signal arrow. It's a removable backpack attachment with LED arrows, each on their own circuit, with activation buttons placed on the backpack's shoulder strap. This solves the problem of bicycle turn signaling: most cyclists either don't know proper signaling, don't use signals, or make up their own hand gestures to signal where they're going. She's got a lot of bright ideas...

Winter Riding

Winter Riding

It may be cold, snowy, and wet, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to ride a bicycle. Although it's not exactly t-shirt weather, it's definitely possible to stay warm, dry, and upright through seemingly unrideable conditions. The above photo shows a winter bike belonging to our sales employee, Ben. It has a few notable elements that make it a good winter bike. These include a fixed-gear drive train for better traction, boot-friendly BMX pedals, a cantilever front brake for extra stopping...

Hamburgers = Anime

Hamburgers = Anime

We found a broken hamburger bell at the shop today. The bells are made out of plastic (which doesn't ring) so naturally, a plastic bell must have a metal ringer component. It looks like these ones have a secret custom paint job: These should be great stocking stuffers for the bicycle/hamburger/anime enthusiast in your life.

Bike Part Toilet Fix

Bike Part Toilet Fix

Anywhere where bicycles are fixed, whether it's a professional shop or someone's apartment, there's a box of old parts waiting to be used for something. Our general manager, Bud, used a quick release skewer and a stay from an old Blackburn rack and fixed our faulty toilet lever. The best part is that all material used is made out of aluminum and stainless steel and won't ever rust!

GOING SOOOOOOOOO FAST

GOING SOOOOOOOOO FAST

Well, not everything interesting that happens here is bicycle related. This afternoon there was a photo shoot in our test ride alley for Popular Science magazine involving a local MIT student's motorized shopping cart mobile. It's electric powered, has disc brakes, and even ground effects(!!!) and was built across the street behind us in an MIT lab.

Our mechanic Tom recently finished this custom build for the shop. It's the new Origin 8 Del Pesado frame built as a coaster brake single-speed, equipped with riser bars, DP-18 rims, and Odyssey pedals. It's a great bike for getting around and getting your sick skids on. Also: it's yours for $650! Get it for yourself before someone else does. (We also have a couple of these framesets available for purchase, or for a custom build. They're only $199 if you buy a crankset and wheelset, too!) Just...

Light Lane Prototype released

Light Lane Prototype released

Want your bike to shoot lasers? Of course you do! While some may fantasize of this idea for more subversive means, the designers at Boston's own LightLane have more practical uses for bike-mounted laser projectiles. Months ago their design for a self-contained, laser-projected bike lane for night riding made the rounds of the internet. Recently, they created a working prototype of their concept and a video documenting it in action. Compressed digital video and real-life experience are two...

Straight Bar Adventure

Straight Bar Adventure

This customer had this mona-lisa smile about him as he picked up his repair, so I asked him if he had just had straight bars installed. He said he had and I responded with, "that's so cooool." He had bought the fuji track from us and was now making the journey to a customized street machine. I've been helping people do this for over 10 years so I know the inevitable excitement a cyclist feels when he or she customizes their ride for the first time and really begins to take ownership of their...

The bike is size 55cm and is for sale for $2000. We can ship it anywhere in the continental USA for $100. Other than all the parts on this bike, we have a very limited...

Rick

Rick

This is Rick. Once an employee, Rick is now an M.I.T. designer and computer guy who designed a new tool for us to install sealed ball bearings...AND IT WORKS REALLY WELL!! We got it today. It's made from a brass weight, so it has the necessary heft to snug those little sealed guys right in...quick. Our mechanic Tom has already used it several times to swiftly switch out bearings for folks in a rush-- just another piece in the upgrade to our service department. Expect more upgrades soon. As...

Igleheart Frames and Forks

For those of you who don't know, Christopher Igleheart is one of New Englands finest frame builders. He constructs his functional works of art through the use of high quality steel tubing. Chris has a long and exciting career in the bike industry going back to the early days of mountain biking and working with Fat City Cycles. I won't go through his whole life story but a lot of time has passed and I can personally vouch that this guy still knows how to rail the trails with the best of them!...

Cruiser Mountain Track Bike with a Disk Brake

Cruiser Mountain Track Bike with a Disk Brake

I don't know if you could combine any more types of bikes into one unless you were Sheldon Brown himself. But GW has made a rather interesting Bicycle indeed. It started life as a cruiser with mountain bike style 26 inch wheels, but after GW threw down his $50 for it its life changed course. Now sporting 700c track wheels and an extra welded strut near the bottom bracket an Avid Juicy 7 disk brake now resides where normally most people would attach a 22 tooth granny gear. I got to ride this...
