Camping season is finally here, and we’re focusing on helping you make the most of it! Join us this Sunday in our shop for an Intro to Bike Camping workshop with the founder/owner/creative director of Swift Industries, Martina! Doors open at 6:30, presentation starts at 7! Martina's presentation is focused on executing a bike camping adventure with an emphasis on accessibility and reducing the learning curve of being self-sustainable on two wheels. She will be explaining how to prepare...
New Year’s Day Ramble
I was invited to small group ride on New Year's Day, which ended up being just five of us by the 9:30 rollout. Myself, Sandy, our salesperson Rob, and our new friend Annemarie ventured out to Acton and back for a nearly perfect 50 mile ride. It started with donuts, coffee, and quiet city streets. We scrambled over a frozen Minuteman Trail, eventually leaving it in favor of sleepy rural roads. Traffic was low, the sun was warm, and the temperature was just perfect to stay cozy without...
Minidrome Madness
The other day, Paul Carson, a local frame-builder and teacher, announced a minidrome was completed inside the Artisan's Asylum, a Somerville collective art space. Some of the Cambridge Bicycle crew headed up to check it out armed with a stash of beer and a vintage GT Dyno. The results were beautiful. You can see this wasn't your average Red Bull-chugging minidrome event. Bill's up there rocking our snack bike, a vintage GT Dyno. It's not even broken after this. At the start, it was supposed to...
Nexus 3-Speed Hub Tear Down
Eric, a Ph.D. candidate in Mechanical Engineering at MIT, contacted us recently for a project. We donated a Shimano 3-Speed hub to open up and document for a presentation. He sent us back a few photos to show and tell. If you've always wanted, but never have opened up one of these hubs, behold: Thanks again for sharing the photos with us. Best of luck with the project, Eric.
Odyssey Twisted Pedals – Limited Colors
We managed to get our hands on one last shipment of Odyssey Twisted pedals in Grape, Midnight Blue, Construction Orange, and Bright Red. Most of our distributors have been out of stock of these for months - we're stoked to have them in! We also have matching Odyssey Aaron Ross grips for a few of these. Matching grips and pedals are an awesome way to personalize your commuter. If you already own a pair of these getting a backup pair is not a bad idea, especially if they go with more...
CB Cycling Clinic at MIT
Last week Cambridge Bicycle was invited to an event with the MIT Transportation Department to promote cycling in the MIT community. Ben, Bill, and Bud represented the shop for community outreach. Students, staff, and faculty stopped by for air in their tires, oil for their chain, and a quick safety check to make sure their bikes were road-ready. We also were able to give away some bike maps from the City of Boston, pamphlets on bike safety and laws from the Cambridge Police, and some great...
Vintage Business Cards
We have a customer that's been coming to us for rental bikes for several years now and still has the original business card we gave him. Things have changed a lot since then, and more changes are sure to come. Remember when Superb was Boston Bicycle?
New and Used Bicycles for Children
Our selection of kids' bikes is really happening this year. Diamondback just came out with two new models: the Insight 24 (pictured above) and Clarity 24 (the same thing, only in pink). We have both models in stock because they are awesome, lightweight hybrids made from aluminum (rather than steel). They're also only $300! Diamondback's Insight and Clarity 24 are absolutely perfect for advanced young riders who are ready for an adult-style bike, but aren't quite big enough to fit a 26" or 700c...
Pushing Ahead
Tom, Morgan, Ben, Pete, and a few friends riding the Ronde de Rosey this past Sunday. Who knew there was this much dirt to ride around Boston?!
Homebrew Segway
We see projects from local electronics and engineering students from time to time. This modded unicycle came in for a pair of fresh pedals - apparently a homebrew Segway. Of course, we just had to see it in action.
Get ready….time for school!

Thursday Trick Nights @ Superb Bicycle
We are starting a regular Thursday Trick Night. Anyone interested can meet up at Superb at or before 7pm Thursday nights, literally anyone, beginner to advanced, with whatever bike you have. We will roll out to various locations around town to have fun and work on some tricks. Even if you just want to master your track stands or hang out this will be a good way to learn new skills and make new friends. Last night was our test run and Christian, Craig and I had a great time! Hope to see you...
i can”t believe i slipped my chain…
Lady Gaga at MIT Museum Today
According to certain sources, Lady Gaga is making an appearance at the MIT museum of Science this afternoon. If you love photography and celebrity sightings as much as you love bikes, today is your day. If you get her autograph or phone number come across the street to the shop and tell us about it.
Morgan is Pleased to See You
Always.
Hamburgers = Anime
We found a broken hamburger bell at the shop today. The bells are made out of plastic (which doesn't ring) so naturally, a plastic bell must have a metal ringer component. It looks like these ones have a secret custom paint job: These should be great stocking stuffers for the bicycle/hamburger/anime enthusiast in your life.
Kids on Coffee
For a little while, we've had a few coffee-themed bikes in the shop: Bianchi's Milano Parco cafe racers, and our folding bikes by KHS: the Mocha and Latte. For 2010 we've added a brand new city bike by Bianchi that's a great choice for both getting coffee as well as serious commuting: the Pista Via Brera. The Pista Via Brera is designed for functionality and style: it comes with a fixed/free drivetrain, laid-back handlebars (with cork grips!) a threaded headset, a front brake, and...
Bike Part Toilet Fix
Anywhere where bicycles are fixed, whether it's a professional shop or someone's apartment, there's a box of old parts waiting to be used for something. Our general manager, Bud, used a quick release skewer and a stay from an old Blackburn rack and fixed our faulty toilet lever. The best part is that all material used is made out of aluminum and stainless steel and won't ever rust!

GOING SOOOOOOOOO FAST
Well, not everything interesting that happens here is bicycle related. This afternoon there was a photo shoot in our test ride alley for Popular Science magazine involving a local MIT student's motorized shopping cart mobile. It's electric powered, has disc brakes, and even ground effects(!!!) and was built across the street behind us in an MIT lab.

Embrocation Vol. 3 Release Party Wrap up!
Earlier this week was the long anticipated Embrocation Volume 3 Release Party. The party was a huge success and I have to say Volume 3 is looking pretty amazing (I got a free copy for DJing! Thanks Jeremy.) The New England cycling scene was out in force and wasn't shy about getting down on the dance floor. I had a great time behind the decks alongside DJ Claude Money. Money started the night off with some nice soul Jams while I finished it out with some bangers and electro. sick moves. Pick up...
Mark McCormack seminar
When you have one of New England's top racers demo the new Shimano electronic shifters, you can count on getting some seriously thorough guidance. Mark McCormack is both our Fuji and Shimano rep., and he really has the whole spectrum of cycling covered. He brought in the new Shimano system on an updated SL1(14lbs) Fuji (my own sweet ride of choice) and showed us how quick and responsive it can be. The chain did fall off once when Jason was cranking it, and we questioned its durability and need...

Independent Fabrication “Fresh Rides”
I had the opportunity to attend the exclusive Indy Fab Party last night that opened their weekend long gallery show. I was instantly blown away by the presentation and organization of the event. The bikes were all beautifully displayed either hung from the high ceilings or on wooden platforms, with spot lighting accentuating the amazing handmade frames. The attention to detail was palpable in the lug work all the way down to the fender supports of the commuter bikes. It was also great to see...

Thanks for Coming out on New Years Eve!!
We all had a blast on New Years Eve thanks to all the hard work everyone put in. Racers showed up in the sub 0 degree temperatures to compete in a Crit Style race on the snow covered steets. There were 4, 1 mile laps and not everyone made it to the finish, a few succumbed to the cold while a broken crank arm stopped Tristan in his tracks. In the end it was Eric who took home the Gold Velocity Wheelset donated by Cambridge Bicycle. Alex came in second with Tristan( different Tristan than the...

Sessions1
Had a little fun with this one last week. We are toying with the idea of hosting a trick session every once in a while. Maybe in a new secret location every time. It is a good chance for us to test out some new product. And, well if we can find some interesting indoor locations it will be the time of year for it. What you see here is Rob Bottomly crafting one of our new SE Quadangle Looptail. Watch how the gold reflects off the flash of the camera. Pretty bling eh? Rob said that the bike was...

We had a couple of pretty awesome bikes in the shop today. One was a Bud Bike Works (#9 actually) built by our good friend Matty Budd. I wonder what he is up to these days? Rumor has it he may be cranking out some frames soon. In any case we had a happy customer on our hands. He went on about how much he likes it, and how fun it is to ride. His favorite part...the Matt Budd special back end.
