Our best boy, Joshua, will be leaving the shop after 12 years! Over that time, he’s helped countless folks first as a mechanic, then service manager, and eventually working up to store manager. We recently had the pleasure of giving Katie’s trusty @surlybikes Cross Check a major overhaul! This thing has been an active duty commuter for 10+ years at this point and Katie wanted to shake things up, majorly. Namely, Katie wanted to move to a 1x drivetrain and add dynamo lighting to all better suit her needs and use case. We also opted to use a lot of the original parts that were in still good working order, like the cranks, bars, and canti brakes while opting for new stuff as needed, like wheels, chainring, drivetrain parts, and shifter. The end result, we think, encapsulates a truly flexible commuter rig that can also handle bike touring/camping and more! It also came out looking so good in the way only a bike that’s got a lot of #beausage can. We’re big fans of helping folks replace car trips with bike trips, obviously. Cargo e-bikes are excellent tools for such a job and there are loads out there nowadays. We helped Andrea pick one out for daycare pick-up and drop-off duties that will get her and her son around super comfortably. We landed on the new @velotricebike GoMad due to it’s fairly compact size for city dwellers, super stable ride, great giddy-up and range, and because it can take a @thule Yepp seat natively. This obsidian paint is also beautiful in the sun - I mean, just look at that! The built-in stash bag can also fit that long @kryptonitelock Evolution chain perfectly too cause you know you gotta protect the investment. We had the pleasure to help Frank re-configure this sweet @surlybikes Cross Check that we originally built up in March 2020! It was originally built up with a simpler 3-speed IGH for ease of use, but Frank decided it finally needed a drivetrain upgrade to give him more range. So, we went with a bombproof @shimanomtb Deore 12 speed set up. The tricky part was finding a ring for geared drivetrains for those 144bcd cranks - thankfully @specialites_ta makes em still! With a 50t ring and 50t ring and 11-50 range on that cassette, Frank has now got loads of range and has a 1:1 bail out gear, which is lower than before. Got to love it! Frank’s also got a bunch of fun details sprinkled in throughout that we are also really digging. Thanks for letting us revisit this sweet bike, Frank! Have a nice ride! ...
Kiem had us build up this @leaderbike 735 frameset and it feels like it’s 2011 all over again! It’s complete with deep carbon wheels, riser bars, and a tuff gear ratio. A true all gas, no brakes kinda ride for sure! Thanks for tapping us in, Kiem, and keep the rubber side down! ...

We had the pleasure of making a few upgrades to this ‘93 Bridgestone XO-3! We swapped out the stock bars for some more relaxed chiller bars from @velo_orange as well as threw some new wheels on it, upgraded the shifters to some more modern triggers, and upgraded the braking to way more powerful @rideshimano v brakes. New bikes are great and have loads of benefits, but sometimes putting some love into the bike you already own and love is the right approach, and we’re happy to help either way! Plus, these old Bridgestones are real gems (in terms of practicality and reliability) and it’s great to keep so many still on the road. Got an itch for a mean and modern steel gravel bike? The @marinbikes Nicasio 2 has really impressed us in almost every respect and demonstrated it’s a real contender for an all-rounder gravel bike that can competently do it all. It’s a comfortable and fast bike for all-day rides, capable and comfortable even on some loose terrain, and can take bags and racks for all sorts of cargo for camping and bikepacking. It’s built with Marin’s lighter steel tubeset and a carbon fork, an excellent geo (even in the smaller sizes!), 50mm tire clearance, a @shimanogravel 10s setup with hydro brakes, and it’s UDH-equipped so it’s future-proofed for any drivetrain you’d want in the future. We built some nice + new wheelset for Bruno’s Trek Y5 full sus! We ended up going for a pretty polished @velocityusa A23s with some of their nice silver hubs, double-butted spokes, and some cool red alloy nipples. While the bike was here, we did a tune-up on it and got it back in solid operational shape (and took some nice photos of it too). What a nice headset, right? We’re back! Come ride with us this Sunday for dirt church! We’ll be meeting at the shop at 8:45am and rolling out at 9am towards the Fells. Sarah is going to be embarking on Bos/tréal, which is a 400 mile adventure from Boston to Montreal put on by the @bostoncyclistsunion! It’s part mega bike adventure and fundraiser for their crucial bike advocacy work. Anyways! Sarah wanted to get her bike ready for the ride with some lighter, faster wheels than the stock 650b wheels on this sweet carbon @bombtrackbicycleco rig. We went with some of our favorites, like the @hopetech Pro 5s, @velocityusa Ailerons, a mix of double and triple butted spokes, and some sweet green alloy nips. We wanted the smoke hubs and green nipples to match the colors on the bike, and we think we nailed it. Some fast rolling @teravail Updraft gravel tires round it out since the ride will feature a good amount of gravel roads. We’re stoked with the end result! Thanks, Sarah, and have a blast! ...
Over the winter, we did a frame swap for our dear friend Nick. Nick had an early prototype 🍣 @crustbikes Nor’easter (that you might recall us posting years back) in large, but wanted to size up to the XL on the production version, shown here. We love the proportions on this thing and it’s so big, it’s got us saying oui oui 🤌. Nick’s a big guy too, so all will be well. Built up in true #nutmegcountry fashion as well with the friction shifting barend for that XT 11sp mech as well as the wide boiiii Towel Rack bars. These wheels we built a few years ago are still going strong as well - always the goal with our hand built wheels! Thanks so much for the love, Nick 💋💋💋 ...
Whole lotta text incoming! We’re pouring one out cause one of our best friends/best customers of all time is moving back to the Bay Area! We’ve known @wicked.hella a real long time and have loved helping him with all sorts of sick bike stuff over the years, but this one feels even more special as the last one for the time being. A few weeks before moving, Mike picked up this super sweet vintage @gunnarcycles Street Dog last minute that was in need of a real thorough rebuild. Thankfully, Mike has a thorough parts bin, so he was able to throw in some major goodies to round out most ends. That left some new bars, wheels, and dynamo lighting for us to sort out. Mike is a big dynamo fan and wanted the best of the best - @sonnabendynamo. We built that and the nice @paulcomponent track hub to the best rim brake road rim, the @velocityusa Quill with some super duper light @alpinaspokes Ultralite spokes cause that’s how Mike rolls. The pink @sonnabendynamo matches his perfectly faded @philwoodandco headset and @whiteind crank cap too, which is the icing on the cake. And, #employeerob had the @rivbike Wavies, which finished the whole thing off. We’re gonna miss this dude a lot but we’re stoked for his next chapter back in SF. Love you Mike!!! ...
The homie @oscposh came through to get these immaculate Dura-Ace track cranks with the new @aarn_ ring installed on his trusty Bridgestone track frame. But maybe best of all, Oscar had those new matching purp Air Max Ishods to keep the 💜 vibe going! Gotta love it when people match their kicks to their bikes! In case you were wondering, we do fast, racy bikes too! This super sick @ridecannondale SuperSix EVO 1 came through for assembly for a customer who’s been riding an older gen SuperSix for over 10 years and decided to treat himself to the newest iteration. This thing is fully equipped with all the goodies like a @sramroad Force AXS drivetrain with those phenomenal new E1 brakes and power meter, super aero @reservewheels carbon hoops with DT 240s, and all carbon everything down to the integrated cockpit. If you want to go fast and that’s it, this thing is up for it. ...
Our dawg @night_duck got a dog, so a bike to carry said dog was now necessary! Thankfully, @omnium makes the perfect vehicle for said job - their classic Cargo bike! We started with a frameset and went to town on it. The goal was a solid and rugged build that can take some roughhousing and abuse. So, we gave that new-new @srammtb mechanical Transmission a shot for the extra-extra durability and solid range for a long and heavy(ish) bike as well as some 4-piston SRAM mineral oil stoppers too for safety! We built up some nice wheels with Sam’s choice of hubs from @hopetech and SP to the matching @velocityusa Blunt 35 in 29” for the rear and 20” for the front. Every bike needs a dynamo, especially the cargo bike! Those @stridsland_journal Bullship bars really bring the whole bike together and keep the handling stable and comfy. For the maiden voyage, Sam trucked #employeerob around the neighborhood and both confirmed the ride was chill AF. We hope that the next time we see this bike, we see Dan the dog on the front! Nick had these gorgeous @philwoodandco touring hubs from another wheelset that needed a lil TLC with new bearings, but now they’re ready for another few thousand miles. We built em up around the trusty and 💪 @velocityusa Cliffhangers and some light and strong triple butted spokes. We set em up with these sweet new @conti_bicycle Terra Competition rubber set up tubeless for that easy living 😎 Thanks for letting us put these together Nick - we hope they serve you well on tour! ...
Yesterday was a good day cause one of our favorite people ever just picked up his new baaaaaad @stridsland_journal Beachcomber!! This thing came out really special and we’re stoked for @big_keez to rip around on such a sweet bike. We decided to keep it 26+ as was intended cause #26aintdead yet thanks to @wildernesstrailbikes!!! The @srammtb GX Eagle drivetrain and 4-piston mineral oil brakes let this thing go up real well as come right back down nice and easy. Big fans of the dynamo set up, the classy AF white @brooksengland saddle, and cool silver @pnwcomponents dripper too! There’s so many other fun details on this bike too, so feast your eyes! This weekend is #employeerobs b-day so we are gonna ride!!! The plan is to meet at the shop on Sunday 4/12 and roll out at 9:30 to hit up some dirt in Belmont and then post up for come cafecito afuera (coffee outside for the uninitiated) and possibly some birthday cake! Then, we’ll ride back to Cambridge eventually. The ride will be roughly 18 miles round trip and have a few miles of dirt so be sure your bike has some sufficient tires, functional brakes, and some water portage solutions! You may be familiar with the artwork of @russpope from his collaborations with @simworksusa and @cinelli_official, among others. We here are big fans for sure! Recently, Russ brought in a sweet vintage Peugeot ATB for a build, which was a nice treat because it’s always nice to build a fun bike for someone whose work you greatly admire. The build has a lot of nice parts from @simworks, @nitto_handlebar_works, @paulcomponent, @velocityusa, and @velo_orange mixed together with a very Rivendell-esque drivetrain to offer reliable, no-nonsense performance throughout. You read that right - we’re bringing back the winter overhaul this year! It was very popular last year and we figured it’s a great chance for you to give your bike a little more love given that the riding conditions have been extra harsh this winter. It’s also a slower time of year for us and helps keep us busy, so it’s a win-win!
The run-down is that the winter overhaul is a souped-up version of our standard tune-up for $200. It includes the installation of new consumable parts that are impacted by salty conditions (chains, cables, brake pads, tires, cassettes, etc) but doesn’t include the parts themselves. We’ll also clean the bike more thoroughly and ensure your seatpost is all greased up so you don’t have to worry about a stuck seatpost next year (or the next or the next next). Come on down for a lil bike spa day - if you’ve been riding through this winter, your bike surely deserves it! ...
Remember that steamy modified @surlybikes Steamroller we teased the other week? Here’s the complete build we just finished up. Our dear friend Joe has been patiently waiting for this one for a while and we can confidently say that good things come to those who wait 😉. In case you missed it, this frame was modified and had some new braze-ons to allow for racks and fenders front and rear to make this a touring or rando-friendly single-speed. Then, we built it from ground up with a 650b dynamo wheelset and svelte tubeless @ultradynamico rubber, double singlespeed gearing (16t for the flats and 18t for the climbs), @simworksusa cockpit and rack, cute @sklarbikes stem, and special @newbaums wrap job. They are one of the most comfort-enhancing upgrades you can make to your bike, especially if you have to ride in crappy conditions (like bike commuters, bike tourers, randonneurs, etc.). Addie had a really nice #newbikeday last week! This @allcitycycles Space Horse was hanging out after we did a frame swap, but it ended up being the perfect size and color for her! We went to town with some fun pink parts and even built up some super sweet wheels for her! It’s built with a good mix of reliable parts with solid performance while still staying cute and fun at the same time. Addie will be tackling her 10 mile commute and more on this beautiful steed and we’re sure it’ll be a lot more fun and fast with a bike as nice as this!

Around 8 years ago, our friend Franklin got a Fuji Feather from us, which was a super reliable and fun bike for his needs. However, his needs have changed - funny how having a kid will do that to ya! So, he picked up this sweet @allcitycycles Space Horse but decided some things needed changing, mainly the cockpit. We swapped in those sweet new @simworksusa Still Cruisin Bullmoose bars as well as some proper @velo_orange fenders for the coming wet season and a @surlybikes to haul all the stuff! We teased some photos of this stunning @crustbikes Malocchio Disc that we built last week for our friend Makoto so here are some more proper shots for you to enjoy! We envisioned this as a synthesis of a modern and classic road bike, so we made some specific decisions on the build like a mechanical 2x drivetrain, all metal components (aside from that beautiful fork), mechanical disc brakes, with 38mm slick rubber. It simultaneously rides like a great modern bike does but maintains the functionality, versatility, and practicality of a classic roadie. Makoto was after some gold accents, so we obliged that as well with all the nice goodies from @chriskingbuzz, @wolf_tooth_comp, and @growtac. A full @nitto_handlebar_works @simworksusa @crustbikes cockpit completes the package in our opinion too - can’t get better than that to us! We recently had the pleasure of giving Katie’s trusty @surlybikes Cross Check a major overhaul! This thing has been an active duty commuter for 10+ years at this point and Katie wanted to shake things up, majorly. Namely, Katie wanted to move to a 1x drivetrain and add dynamo lighting to all better suit her needs and use case. We also opted to use a lot of the original parts that were in still good working order, like the cranks, bars, and canti brakes while opting for new stuff as needed, like wheels, chainring, drivetrain parts, and shifter. The end result, we think, encapsulates a truly flexible commuter rig that can also handle bike touring/camping and more! It also came out looking so good in the way only a bike that’s got a lot of #beausage can. We’re big fans of helping folks replace car trips with bike trips, obviously. Cargo e-bikes are excellent tools for such a job and there are loads out there nowadays. We helped Andrea pick one out for daycare pick-up and drop-off duties that will get her and her son around super comfortably. We landed on the new @velotricebike GoMad due to it’s fairly compact size for city dwellers, super stable ride, great giddy-up and range, and because it can take a @thule Yepp seat natively. This obsidian paint is also beautiful in the sun - I mean, just look at that! The built-in stash bag can also fit that long @kryptonitelock Evolution chain perfectly too cause you know you gotta protect the investment. We had the pleasure to help Frank re-configure this sweet @surlybikes Cross Check that we originally built up in March 2020! It was originally built up with a simpler 3-speed IGH for ease of use, but Frank decided it finally needed a drivetrain upgrade to give him more range. So, we went with a bombproof @shimanomtb Deore 12 speed set up. The tricky part was finding a ring for geared drivetrains for those 144bcd cranks - thankfully @specialites_ta makes em still! With a 50t ring and 50t ring and 11-50 range on that cassette, Frank has now got loads of range and has a 1:1 bail out gear, which is lower than before. Got to love it! Frank’s also got a bunch of fun details sprinkled in throughout that we are also really digging. Thanks for letting us revisit this sweet bike, Frank! Have a nice ride! ...

We had the pleasure of making a few upgrades to this ‘93 Bridgestone XO-3! We swapped out the stock bars for some more relaxed chiller bars from @velo_orange as well as threw some new wheels on it, upgraded the shifters to some more modern triggers, and upgraded the braking to way more powerful @rideshimano v brakes. New bikes are great and have loads of benefits, but sometimes putting some love into the bike you already own and love is the right approach, and we’re happy to help either way! Plus, these old Bridgestones are real gems (in terms of practicality and reliability) and it’s great to keep so many still on the road. Got an itch for a mean and modern steel gravel bike? We built some nice + new wheelset for Bruno’s Trek Y5 full sus! We ended up going for a pretty polished @velocityusa A23s with some of their nice silver hubs, double-butted spokes, and some cool red alloy nipples. While the bike was here, we did a tune-up on it and got it back in solid operational shape (and took some nice photos of it too). What a nice headset, right? Sarah is going to be embarking on Bos/tréal, which is a 400 mile adventure from Boston to Montreal put on by the @bostoncyclistsunion! It’s part mega bike adventure and fundraiser for their crucial bike advocacy work. Anyways! Sarah wanted to get her bike ready for the ride with some lighter, faster wheels than the stock 650b wheels on this sweet carbon @bombtrackbicycleco rig. We went with some of our favorites, like the @hopetech Pro 5s, @velocityusa Ailerons, a mix of double and triple butted spokes, and some sweet green alloy nips. We wanted the smoke hubs and green nipples to match the colors on the bike, and we think we nailed it. Some fast rolling @teravail Updraft gravel tires round it out since the ride will feature a good amount of gravel roads. We’re stoked with the end result! Thanks, Sarah, and have a blast! ...
Over the winter, we did a frame swap for our dear friend Nick. Nick had an early prototype 🍣 @crustbikes Nor’easter (that you might recall us posting years back) in large, but wanted to size up to the XL on the production version, shown here. We love the proportions on this thing and it’s so big, it’s got us saying oui oui 🤌. Nick’s a big guy too, so all will be well. Built up in true #nutmegcountry fashion as well with the friction shifting barend for that XT 11sp mech as well as the wide boiiii Towel Rack bars. Whole lotta text incoming! We’re pouring one out cause one of our best friends/best customers of all time is moving back to the Bay Area! We’ve known @wicked.hella a real long time and have loved helping him with all sorts of sick bike stuff over the years, but this one feels even more special as the last one for the time being. A few weeks before moving, Mike picked up this super sweet vintage @gunnarcycles Street Dog last minute that was in need of a real thorough rebuild. Thankfully, Mike has a thorough parts bin, so he was able to throw in some major goodies to round out most ends. That left some new bars, wheels, and dynamo lighting for us to sort out. Mike is a big dynamo fan and wanted the best of the best - @sonnabendynamo. We built that and the nice @paulcomponent track hub to the best rim brake road rim, the @velocityusa Quill with some super duper light @alpinaspokes Ultralite spokes cause that’s how Mike rolls. The pink @sonnabendynamo matches his perfectly faded @philwoodandco headset and @whiteind crank cap too, which is the icing on the cake. And, #employeerob had the @rivbike Wavies, which finished the whole thing off. We’re gonna miss this dude a lot but we’re stoked for his next chapter back in SF. Love you Mike!!! ...

In case you were wondering, we do fast, racy bikes too! This super sick @ridecannondale SuperSix EVO 1 came through for assembly for a customer who’s been riding an older gen SuperSix for over 10 years and decided to treat himself to the newest iteration. This thing is fully equipped with all the goodies like a @sramroad Force AXS drivetrain with those phenomenal new E1 brakes and power meter, super aero @reservewheels carbon hoops with DT 240s, and all carbon everything down to the integrated cockpit. If you want to go fast and that’s it, this thing is up for it. ...
Our dawg @night_duck got a dog, so a bike to carry said dog was now necessary! Thankfully, @omnium makes the perfect vehicle for said job - their classic Cargo bike! We started with a frameset and went to town on it. The goal was a solid and rugged build that can take some roughhousing and abuse. So, we gave that new-new @srammtb mechanical Transmission a shot for the extra-extra durability and solid range for a long and heavy(ish) bike as well as some 4-piston SRAM mineral oil stoppers too for safety! We built up some nice wheels with Sam’s choice of hubs from @hopetech and SP to the matching @velocityusa Blunt 35 in 29” for the rear and 20” for the front. Every bike needs a dynamo, especially the cargo bike! Those @stridsland_journal Bullship bars really bring the whole bike together and keep the handling stable and comfy. For the maiden voyage, Sam trucked #employeerob around the neighborhood and both confirmed the ride was chill AF. We hope that the next time we see this bike, we see Dan the dog on the front!
