Winter Tires

Panaracer Crossblasters

Since the temperature dropped a few weeks ago and we’ve received classic New England Winter™ we’ve had a lot of questions about studded tires for winter riding. The short version of this conversation is “don’t buy them if you live in Boston.” Studded tires are great for riding on frozen surfaces that stay frozen and snow-covered, but are not necessarily great for the conditions we see here. Snow removal in the Boston area is pretty efficient and roads tend to clear up within a couple days after snowfall (sometimes sooner).

Panaracer Crossblasters

Pictured above are the Panaracer CrossBlaster 700x31c tires. They’re about as perfect as possible for winter riding in the conditions we frequently see. Many of us on staff ride these since most of us ride every day, rain or shine. We love these tires because they simply want to stay upright. When the roads clear, they ride fine at high pressure without feeling like they’re bogging you down the way studded tires do. If you’re not sure if they’ll fit in your frame, we’re happy to help you out. We also carry several other tires that may be appropriate (or better) for how you ride through winter. If your current tires aren’t working for you this winter, stop by with our bikes and we’ll makes some recommendations.
